We invite you to a discussion: “Spirituality in Abstract Art”, Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.

Despite promising beginnings— abstraction was born from the marriage of art and spirituality (Wassily Kandinsky, Hilma af Klimt)—over the course of the 20th century, spirituality became a less obvious reference for abstract and avant-garde art. A comprehensive anthology devoted to abstract art, published in the 21st century by London’s Whitechapel Gallery and The MIT Press as part of the prestigious “Documents of Contemporary Art” series, points only at formal, economic, and social abstraction, whereas the spiritual or transcendental abstraction is absent.
Can abstract art today, and more broadly, contemporary art, still reach for and express transcendent matters?
This will be discussed at the Manifest[o] Gallery by Professor Sławomir Marzec and Professor Jan Stanisław Wojciechowski, and the discussion will be moderated by Piotr Bernatowicz, Ph.D.
The discussion accompanies Sławomir Marzec’s exhibition entitled “In the Horizon”.
